 20세기 미국 소설의 대표자는 어네스트 헤밍웨이(Enest Hemingway, 1899~1961)다. 그가 쓴 소설 중에는 <노인과 바다>가 있는데, 그는 그 소설로 퓰리처상과 노벨 문학상을 받았다. 그 외에도 <무기여 잘 있거라>, <누구를 위하여 종을 울리나> 등의 작품으로 세계에 널리 알려졌고, 그 작품들은 영화가 되어 한국에서도 절찬리에 상영되기도 했다. 헤밍웨이는 문명의 세계를 속임수로 보고, 인간의 내면과 비극적 모습을 간결한 문체로 서술했었다.

 

나는 대학에서 영문학을 공부한 바 있어서, 40여 년 전에 시카고에 있는 헤밍웨이 생가를 직접 가본 적이 있다. 헤밍웨이는 소설 외에도 시와 단편소설을 쓰기도 했다. 그리고 그는 고등학교를 졸업하자마자 <켄사스 시티>에 기자 일을 했고, 1차 세계대전에 종군하여 두 다리에 총상을 입었다. 그는 다양한 경험을 바탕으로 제2차 세계대전의 참상을 소설로 그려냈다.

어네스트 헤밍웨이는 윌리암 포크너와 함께 전후에 이른바 <잃어버린 세대: Lost Generation>을 다루었다. 세계대전으로 어떤 이는 남편을 잃고, 어떤 이는 아내를 잃고, 살아있다 해도 눈을 잃은 사람, 다리를 잃은 사람, 팔을 잃은 사람, 아버지를 잃은 사람들로 가득했다. 그는 잃어버린 세대에서 전쟁의 비참함과 인간 내부의 악을 고발하기도 했다.

 

그는 <잃어버린 세대>란 말로 현대의 잔인한 전쟁을 진단했었다.

사실 우리나라의 경우 6·25때 북한의 남침으로 시작된 동족상잔의 전쟁이 우리 모두에게는 잃어버린 세대가 되었다. 얼마나 많은 자식을 잃었으며, 얼마나 많은 남편을 잃었을까? 얼마나 많은 고아들이 생겨났을까?

그래서 한국은 불행하게도 고아 수출 1등 국가가 되었다. 필자가 구라파 유학을 갈 때도 비행기표 살돈이 없어서 <홀트 양자회>의 고아들을 대려가는 에스코트로 취직해서 95,000원짜리 돌아올 수 없는 비행기 티켓을 가지고 갔던 일이 생생하다.

 

 6·25 전쟁으로 깡그리 망해버린 대한민국을 위해서 이승만 대통령의 한·미동맹과 미국의 원조로 오늘의 대한민국을 이루었다. 일반적으로 우리가 알기는 6·25 때 대한민국을 도운 나라는 16개국으로 알고 있다. 그러나 그 숫자는 군인을 파병한 나라들이고, 정확히 한국을 물자와 현금으로 도운 나라는 63개국이었다.

대부분 현재 우리나라 선교사들이 활동하고 있는 나라도 자유대한민국을 도운 나라이다.

그 실례로 지금도 가난한 캄보디아도 그 당시 그 어려운 중에도 우리나라에 많은 쌀을 보내왔고, 현금으로 US 달러를 지원한 기록이 있다.

 

 한국의 지난 70년은 잃어버린 시대였지만, 하나님의 은혜로 이 위대한 선진 국가를 만들었다. 그런데 이제 먹고 살게 되었고, 도움을 받는 나라에서 도움을 주는 나라가 되었는데, 이 나라에는 이렇게 종북세력들이 판을 치고 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화, 예술, 언론, 종교 할 것 없이 대한민국의 민주 정부를 무너뜨리려는 운동이 계속되고 있다. 며칠 전 MBC 이사 가운데 한 분이 양심선언을 했다.

그의 말대로 지금 한국의 언론노조는, 모두 민노총의 지시를 받을 뿐 아니라, 김정은의 지시에 따르고 있다고 고백했었다. 정치와 언론과 법조가 이렇게 좌편향 되었고, 교계도 원론적인 좋은 말만 할 뿐 대안이 없다. 

 

우리는 잃어버린 세대였다. 나 같은 사람도 학교에 도시락을 싸서 가본 일도 없고, 미국 원조의 분유를 물에 타서 연명하던 세대였다. 그래도 희망의 끈을 놓지 않고 기도하며 꿈꾸며 여기까지 왔다. 아직도 한국전은 끝나지 않았고, 잠시 휴전 상태이지만, 이 기간에 북의 세작들의 집요한 공작으로 나라가 기울어졌다.

GDP는 엄청 올랐지만, 팍팍한 삶은 여전하고 젊은이들은 갈 곳 없어 방황하고 있다.

청년들 중에는 아예 <비혼>선언을 하면서 축의금을 되돌려 받기 운동을 한단다.

그러니 <지금은 잃어버린 시대> 즉 가정을 잃어버리고, 직장을 잃어버리고, 자기 자신도 잃어버린 시대이다. 

 

미국의 웨스트민스턴 신학교의 탁월한 칼빈주의 신학자이자 변증가였던 코넬리우스 봔틸(Cornelius Van Til) 박사는, 이 세대를 가리켜 <탕자문화의 시대>라고 했다. 탕자가 아버지의 유산을 미리 챙겨 자기 마음대로 띠 띠고 나팔 불며, 허랑방탕하다가 나중에는 돼지가 먹는 쥐엄열매를 먹으며 생명을 겨우 유지하다가 탕자는 아버지 집으로 다시 돌아왔다. 아버지는 날마다 아들이 돌아오는 길목을 바라보며 기다리고 있었다. 드디어 아들이 거지꼴로 돌아오자 아버지는 맨발로 뛰어가서 돌아온 탕자를 맞이 했다. 그리고 소를 잡고 큰 잔치를 베풀고 좋은 옷으로 갈아 입히고 “이는 죽었다가 살아온 내 아들이다”라고 한없이 기뻐했다. 그리고 풍류(Symponia)를 울리고 온 동네 사람들과 기뻐했다.

 

 헤밍웨이는 20세기를 잃어버린 세대(Lost Generation)라고 했지만, 코넬리우스 봔틸 박사는 현대문명을 <탕자문명>이라고 했다. 탕자 문명은 곧 하나님을 버리고, 하나님을 떠난 문명이다.

대한민국 사람들은 점점 풍요로운 물질문명에 취해서 사람들은 하나님을 버리고 신앙을 버리고 제멋대로 자율주의(Autonomous), 혼합주의(Syncreti-sm)에 빠져 방황하고 있다.

그리고 설교자도 하나님께 돌아가자고 외치지 않고 있다.
 
 <탕자문화>에서 <하나님 중심의 문화>로 돌아가자!

 The representative of American fiction in the 20th century is Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961). Among the novels he wrote is The Old Man and the Sea, for which he received the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize for Literature. In addition, he was widely known around the world with works such as <Farewell to Arms> and <For Whom the Bell Tolls>, and those works were screened in Korea as well as films. Hemingway saw the world of civilization as a deception, and described the inner and tragic aspects of human beings in a concise style.

I studied English Literature at university, so I visited Hemingway's birthplace in Chicago about 40 years ago. Besides novels, Hemingway also wrote poetry and short stories. And as soon as he graduated from high school, he worked as a reporter for <Kansas City> and served in World War I, where he was shot in both legs. Based on his various experiences, he portrayed the horrors of World War II as a novel.

Ernest Hemingway worked with William Faulkner on the so-called Lost Generation postwar. Some lost their husbands, some their wives, and even if they were alive, they were full of people who lost an eye, a leg, an arm, or a father. He also denounced the misery of war and the evil within man in The Lost Generation.

 

He diagnosed the brutal war of modern times with the phrase <lost generation>.

In fact, in the case of Korea, the war of fratricide that began with North Korea's invasion of the South at the time of June 25 has become a lost generation for all of us. How many children have you lost, how many husbands have you lost? How many orphans were there?

So, unfortunately, Korea has become the number one exporter of orphans. When I went to study abroad in Europe, I had no money to buy a plane ticket, so I vividly recalled getting a job as an escort for the orphans of the <Holt Children's Association> and taking a plane ticket worth 95,000 won with no return.

 

 For the Republic of Korea, which was completely ruined by the Korean War, President Syngman Rhee's Korea-US alliance and the aid of the United States made today's Republic of Korea possible. Generally, we know that there are 16 countries that helped the Republic of Korea during the June 25th. However, that number is the number of countries that dispatched soldiers, and exactly 63 countries helped Korea with material and cash.

The countries where most of our missionaries are currently active are also countries that helped the free Republic of Korea.

As an example, Cambodia, which is still poor, sent a lot of rice to Korea even during difficult times at that time, and there is a record of supporting US dollars in cash.

 

 Korea's past 70 years have been a lost era, but by the grace of God, it has made this great advanced country. But now, we have been able to make a living, and from a country receiving help to a country that provides help, in this country pro-North Korean forces are prevalent and destroy the democratic government of the Republic of Korea regardless of politics, economy, society, culture, art, media, or religion. The movement to drop it continues. A few days ago, one of the directors of MBC made a declaration of conscience.

As he said, the Korean media unions now confessed that they are not only following the instructions of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, but also following the instructions of Kim Jong-un. Politics, the media, and the legal profession have become left-leaning like this, and the religious world only speaks good things in principle, but there is no alternative. 

 

We were a lost generation. People like me had never packed a packed lunch to school, and it was a generation that lived on milk powder supplied by the United States. Still, I have come this far praying and dreaming without letting go of the string of hope. The Korean War is still not over, and there is a temporary truce, but during this period, the country was tilted by the persistent operation of the North Korean tribal leaders.

GDP has risen dramatically, but the tough life is still there and young people are wandering around with nowhere to go.

Some of the young people even declared <non-marriage> and campaigned to get the congratulatory money back.

So <this is the lost era>, that is, the lost family, the lost job, and the lost oneself. 

 

Dr. Cornelius Van Til, an outstanding Calvinist theologian and apologist at Westminston Seminary in the United States, referred to this generation as the <age of prodigal culture>. The prodigal son took his father's inheritance in advance, gird himself as he pleased, blew a trumpet, went wild, and later ate the berries that pigs ate, barely sustaining his life. The prodigal son returned to his father's house. His father waited every day, watching his son return home. When his son finally returned as a beggar, the father ran in his bare feet to greet the returned prodigal son. Then he slaughtered the ox, gave a great feast, changed into fine clothes, and rejoiced endlessly, saying, “This is my son who has been dead and has come back to life.” And he sounded the symphony and rejoiced with the whole town.

 

 Hemingway called the 20th century the Lost Generation, but Dr. Cornelius Vantil referred to modern civilization as the <prodigal civilization>. The civilization of the prodigal son is a civilization that forsakes God and leaves God.

The people of Korea are increasingly drunk with rich material civilization, and people abandon God, abandon their faith, and wander into Autonomous and Syncreti-sm.

And the preacher is not crying out to return to God.  Let's go back to the

<God-centered culture> from the <prodigal son culture>!
